This past weekend I interacted with a couple of people who both puzzled me in the same way. The male had mascara, earrings, a pink t-shirt and a female name, but was clearly not trying to pass. The female had no breasts, a nose ring and short colourful hair, but was wearing jewelry and a dress, so, likewise, was not trying to pass. I have no idea what their pronouns were but nothing would surprise me. It seems like we've gone from trans people trying to appear as the opposite sex to "anything goes" mix&match stereotypes. It doesn't matter to me, since I've no interest in dating either of those people, but it's kind of curious. I would think this sort of ambiguity is going to be a problem when it comes to the crime of misgendering.
